‘Art makes children powerful' - Bob and Roberta Smith
At Maybury, we believe that a child's education should support and develop their creativity. We value Art and Design as part of the children's entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.
At Maybury, we aim to develop a love of Art as well as fostering a child's talent as an artist. We believe that Art allows children to develop an understanding of the world around them as well as being able to appreciate another's perspective.
Our curriculum allows children to extend their skills in drawing, painting and sculpture with additional work on the use of colour. Our Art lessons allow pupils to engage with a range of different artists with work of varying styles to develop their ability to appreciate and analyse an artist's style, techniques and choices. Children are encouraged to experiment with different materials and techniques before applying them to create their own works of art.
Children follow a carefully sequenced curriculum, which builds on prior learning. In addition to this, a whole school focus on given artists and pieces of artwork is identified through our Curriculum Artists Map. In this way, children experience the same piece of artwork by the same artist at repeated times during their journey through the school. Growing familiarity with the artwork ensures that children can explore and develop their knowledge about the artist as well as deepening their understanding of a piece of artwork.
